The Smoking Entree

Happens to be the name of our new show on the food network. It's not about the culinary masterpiece of an Iron Chef...But about surviving the basic tasks of the kitchen for those of us who don't have much of anything going on for us.

Sunday, Kelly and I attempted to make a beet cake for dessert. Now before you gag at the thought of beet cake, hear me out...despite the revolting sound of the name, it actually tastes like the most delightful and moist carrot cake this side of the Mississippi. About halfway through our assembly of this beauty we discover that we are about 1 cup short of flour. Kelly and I searched everywhere in the storage for some extra, because I refused to believe that Scott Muir wouldn't have at least a 2 months supply on hand. Nothing, not a drop of flour anywhere, and we couldn't back out at this point. So, Kelly grabbed a can of wheat and went for our last recource... grind our own flour. Amish style. Once the cake was in the oven and we were cleaning up our mess I realized that we also forgot to add the coconut...we took a quick double take at the recipe and sure enough, it forgets to tell you to put it in. In spite of all the drawbacks....it turned out surprisingly good. And for the punchline....Kyle knew where the flour was the entire time but enjoyed watching us be recourceful too much to miss out on the show!!! What would we do without family?

Hi Ashlee! My name is Irene, and I work with your Aunt Mary Ellen. She sent me your blog so I could read about this interesting cake. You need to bring some in for us to sample. You should also post pictures of it. They are always fun to see. Hope you don't mind me commenting. You guys are a cute couple.
